The Future of Music: 2014

Tired of “twerking music” and that same song that plays on the radio a million times a day? 2014 has tons to offer in the music department. New artists, albums, and tours are in store for this year along with the inevitable celebrity drama. Here is a list of some things to look out for this year!

  • Pop music may not be the most “popular” music anymore. Indie, Electronica, and Alternative music are currently on the rise! Multiple new artists are a part of making this possible, not to mention the more experienced artists who are beginning to incorporate these new sounds. “Pompeii” by Bastille, “Say Something” by A Great Big World, and “Love Don’t Die” by The Fray have already been chart-toppers this year that include these three popular genres.

  • Some of the world’s most popular artists are going to continue to deliver this year as well! Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Adele, Miley Cyrus, and Taylor Swift all have a new album (or albums) planned for this year! If you like R&B and glass-shattering high notes, one of Grande’s two upcoming albums might be for you. And of course, who doesn’t like a good, fresh Adele or Ed Sheeran song? Not to mention Cyrus, who many people can’t get enough of!

  • Speaking of, Miley-Mania could have a part two along with her hit album Bangerz! If you loved Cyrus this year, she has more in store. Though her album does not currently have a set release date, it’s coming so get ready for the possible oncoming foam-fingers, twerking, hammer-licking and more, if she chooses to go that route again.

  • Cyrus will also be going on tour this year for her hit album Bangerz, and she’s not alone. Many artists will be making their way through America and across the world on tour this year. Lady Gaga will be touring for her hit album ARTPOP, One Direction will have the Where We Are stadium tour for Midnight Memories, and Demi Lovato for Neon Lights with Little Mix for Salute. Justin Timberlake and Jay Z, Britney Spears, Drake, Imagine Dragons, and Robin Thicke are all touring this year as well. Of course we can’t forget about the legendary Warped Tour that takes place every year.

  • If you’re looking for new music, be sure to keep up on movie soundtracks! “Let It Go” and “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” from Frozen as well as “Happy” from Despicable Me 2 have already been chart-topping hits!

  • And something that many are asking, what is to become of Justin Bieber this year? So far, not so good. After releasing a movie in December that was a flop and lying about his supposed retirement, Bieber did not leave 2013 on a good note. That obviously continued into 2014 with his many “issues”. For his sake, hopefully he sorts things out and has a better year than he’s starting with. He currently has no plans for an album or tour this year.

  • Coming into 2014, there are many new artists breaking into the industry. Even Lorde- who we already know and many already love- is still just beginning. Little Mix, a girl band from The X Factor, will be touring with Demi Lovato this year. They recently came out with a new album, Salute, as well as two singles. Sam Smith is another upcoming artist. He recently collaborated with Disclosure and will release an album this year. If that’s not enough for you, watch out for BANKS. She released an EP, London, this past September and it has been remixed by more popular artists.

With all of that being said, be sure to keep your eyes open for all of the artists, music, and drama that 2014 has to offer!
