An attempt by the current government of the Ukraine to retake the city of Slovakian, in which a group of pro-Russian militants seized control of government buildings and weaponry, has recently ended in disaster. Ukraine's 25th Parachute Brigade either surrendered to militants or defected with their armored vehicles, depending on which source you believe, and has been disbanded by President Oleksander Turchynov. Turchynov also stated that soldiers who defected would "be held accountable in court (CNN)." However Russia, the US, and the EU have agreed on a roadmap to help defuse the Ukrainian crisis. Whether or not the involved parties will stick to the plan is still up in the air, but at least it represents a de-escalation of tension in the region. |
