Hey readers! It's February.14, which means another Valentine's Day for the books. Often questions arise on how Valentine's Day came about and why it's even celebrated. Was it a marketing strategy by Hallmark to boost sales? Actually, contrary to popular belief, it wasn't! The name originates from Saint Valentine himself, dating back to AD 270 (aka a long time ago). At the time, Roman emperor Claudius ll cancelled all marriages in Rome because he believed it was distracting men from the military. Saint Valentine decided to marry couples in secret due to his Christian beliefs, and was sentenced to death for doing so. Legends have it that before his inevitable fate on February. 14, he left a note for the jailers daughter saying, "Love from your Valentine," and it is now known as the first Valentine's card. It was the pope that later decided to set aside February.14 to honor Saint Valentine. There you have it, there is in fact a reason behind the day many have come to celebrate! So grab your loved ones and celebrate the day with them! |
