Black Knight Baseball, Softball Split with Tigers

posted Apr 18, 2014, 11:20 AM by Unknown user

The Black Knight softball and baseball teams were in action Thursday afternoon as both teams faced the North Baltimore Tigers at Van Buren.

Strong pitching early by Ross Adolph put the Black Knights in a favorable spot before the Knights exploded for eight runs in the third inning as the boys baseball team improved to 6-1 on the season. After entering the bottom of the third inning with the score tied at 1-1, Van Buren took control of the game scoring 12 runs in the final three innings of a run-rule shortened 13-3 victory. In addition to his strong pitching, Adolph led Van Buren with 2RBI. Schuyler Turner and Payten Whitticar also drove in two runs for the Knights, who take on New Riegel in a double header Saturday. Both games are at home, with the first game's scheduled first pitch at 10 a.m.

On the softball field, a few key errors late in the game ended up costing the Black Knights softball team as they fell to North Baltimore, 8-5 in eight innings Thursday. After falling behind early, the Knights scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead 5-3. With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, North Baltimore rallied, scoring two runs to tie the game and force extra innings. The Tigers continued to pile on runs in the eighth, scoring another three runs that would not be answered by the Black Knights. The softball team fell to 4-7 this season, but look to rebound Friday as they travel to New Riegel this afternoon.

The VB boys’ basketball team were the underdogs in Tuesday night’s sectional game against Tinora, but that didn’t stop the Knights from pulling out the first tournament upset as they won 74 - 67 against the Rams. Senior Sawyer Junge (27) and freshman Braxton Fasone (20) were the top scorers for VB who was losing at halftime 27 - 34. Early in the fourth quarter, a stellar defensive performance resulted in a flurry of fast break lay-ups that put Fasone at the foul line where he shot 9 for 13 to put the Knights in the lead for the first time in the game. Senior point guard Daniel Roberts dished out four assists while continuing to lead the offense after receiving his fourth foul in the third quarter. Junge pulled down nine rebounds and also had four assists. The Black Knights will play in the sectional final game this Friday night at 6:15 p.m. against Paulding. A bus to take students to the game in Defiance is scheduled to leave at 5 p.m. The sign-up sheet to ride the bus is in Coach Hite’s office.

Sonnenberg Qualifies for State

Van Buren's Chance Sonnenberg, a state placer at the OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament last year, will have another shot to  reach the podium this year after finishing in third place in the District Wrestling Tournament on Saturday. After defeating his first two opponents 5-3 and 16-1, Sonnenberg needed a strong finish after falling 5-0 in the semifinal round to eventual 160 pound District champion Tyler Fahrer of Delta. The loss meant Sonnenberg needed to win his next two matches to advance to State for the second consecutive year, which he did, eventually beating Dylen Hartman 8-0 in the consolation bracket final.

Isaac Sexton was Van Buren's other place winner, where he finished in sixth place in the 285 pound weight class. Van Buren took six wrestlers to the tournament, and came away with a 15th place finish in a 50 team field. Full results of the tournament are available here.
