International cuisine and life skills teacher Jolene Johnson has been with her husband Rick for more than two decades: “We’re coming up on our sixteenth anniversary and we dated nine years before we got married.”  The couple have two children together, Sydney and Mason.

How did he propose? Like a dork, just got down on one knee.  We were away for the weekend at a softball tournament and it was in a really bad part of Cleveland.  He was afraid if he didn’t propose before we left for the game that morning, that we would come back and the ring would be stolen.

What’s the most romantic thing he’s ever done for you on Valentine’s Day? One Valentine’s Day after I’d had my son, my husband had this thing that after I’d had my daughter he bought me a pair of diamond earrings.  Rick really wanted to exchange gifts that morning and I was running late for school, but he told me to open it and so I opened it and it was The Notebook movie, which I love.  He said I had to open the movie because he thought he broke it and I’m already late for work and frustrated, so I peel back all this tape and open it, and he had already peeled back the tape, opened it and put a diamond bracelet in there for me.

Do you have any traditions for Valentine’s Day? It’s just the two kids and the two of us, so it’s a small family and we always make things about family.  We’re always doing something with the kids, for the kids.  Really, our job now is raising them, raising healthy, responsible, giving adults so Valentine’s Day isn’t just about us anymore.  So we don’t really have a tradition, we just get the kids a box of candy.  I wish we had a tradition; I’ll tell my husband we have to have a tradition now, from here on out.  Maybe diamonds every Valentine’s Day.
