Jennifer Irving, captain of the Van Buren cheer squad and homecoming queen, is hoping for a successful rest-of-the-season for the Black Knight basketball team. She has gotten close with many of the teammates throughout the years and is excited to end her season with success for both the cheer squad and basketball team.

Irving says that being cheer captain has many perks.  “I like being able to come up with cheers for the girls,” she says.  “I also enjoy picking out what we wear on Fridays.”

The stresses of cheer captain are very few because her coach deals with the stress and tries to keep the group positive.

Irving is planning to attend The Ohio State University.  She is currently undecided in her major but is interested in the pre-med field.  “I have always wanted to be a Buckeye and I plan to go there for grad school.”

Along with cheerleading, Irving is involved in the student council as a representative.  She is a member of JSA and National Honor Society. She volunteers for Gliding Stars and is a candy striper at the hospital.  She works at Birchaven as a dietary aide and in the summer works as a lifeguard at the Northridge pool.  In Irving’s free time she enjoys socializing with her friends, basking in the sun, and swimming.

Why do you cheer for basketball but not football? It was outside and the weather was always an issue.

Favorite season: Summer

What are you most excited for in college? I’m excited for the new environment. I have gone to school at Van Buren since kindergarten so I am ready for something different.

#1 on your bucket list: To swim with dolphins.

Who would you have play you in a movie? Either Jennifer Aniston or Julianne Hough.

Describe your perfect Valentine’s Day: I wouldn’t want it to be too formal. I would get dressed up and he would pick me up with Chinese. We would go back to his house and sit on the floor, eating Chinese and watching movies.
