Agriculture students were busy last week as they celebrated national FFA week here at Van Buren with a spirit week dress-up and the Ag Olympics assembly. Amongst those dressed up to celebrate the values of FFA was senior Jessica Cunningham. Jessica is a first year member of FFA, and she recently placed first in the public speaking Career Development Event which is an extracurricular ag-related contest. For the event she had to present the FFA Creed to a group of judges which meant memorizing it, coming up with gestures, and answering questions about it. Her decision to step out of her comfort zone paid off as she advanced to the District level at Gibsonburg where she swept first prize again. She will compete in the State event two weeks from now. This is the first time in history that Van Buren has sent a student to the State level in this competition.

Outside of FFA, Jessica is involved in her family’s business, Kona Ice Findlay (a recently-opened shaved ice franchise in the Findlay area), and she enjoys reading, writing, and watching TV. In addition to being a writer and photo editor for The Knight Writer, she wishes to become a published author one day. She plans to attend BGSU and major in English with hopes of becoming an English teacher.

What do you love about FFA? It has advanced my leadership and introduced me to a new group of people. They also give back a lot which is really good because I like community service.

Describe yourself in six words? Jess: a constant work in progress

Number one on your bucket list: To be kissed on New Years, because it’s my birthday.

Would you rather be able to marry your favorite fictional hunk or be best friends with your favorite author? Favorite fictional hunk, which would be John Bender from The Breakfast Club or Peeta from Hunger Games.

Favorite band: I am a huge fan of All time Low. I’ll be going to my seventh concert in April.

Favorite book: Perks of Being a Wallflower, I love that book and the movie, it’s so good.

What is your favorite thing to do in the summer? I stay with my aunt and I go and walk out in the woods behind her house. I love to go take pictures and just relax with nature there. It’s very peaceful.
