Six-year Quizbowl member and captain, Matthew Cooper, went out on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015 to help lead his team to a win at the Hancock County Tournament. Cooper answered several crucial questions in the Lightning Round to help propel his team past Riverdale, a traditionally tough opponent, and into the championship round.

Last year the Quizbowl team made it to nationals which was held in Minneapolis, Minn. “I was excited because it took Quizbowl out of the shadows,” Cooper says of making it to nationals.  While the team did not rank high, they had a great time experiencing a more challenging competition and touring the city.

Cooper says his favorite part about Quizbowl is being able to compete in something that is not physical because “I am not athletic”.

“The most frustrating part (about Quizbowl) is when I know the answer but doubt myself and it ends up being right,” he explains.

Cooper plans to attend Heidelberg University where he will study biology.  He plans to be a dentist and go to medical school after he receives his undergraduate degree. “I like Heidelberg because it is small and has a cool atmosphere,” Cooper says.

Along with Quizbowl, Cooper is student council vice president and is also involved in JSA and National Honor Society. He also works at the Findlay Public Library. In Cooper’s spare time, he enjoys being with his girlfriend, playing video games, and learning the guitar.
