With four incoming freshmen and one new junior, the wrestling team will have its greatest number of participants in recent memory, with a total of 12 athletes on the team. Head Coach Bryan Whitticar is back after a year off, and Chancellor Sonnenberg (weighing in at 170 lbs) is returning with a goal of a second-straight State appearance. The only senior on the squad, Austin Corey (113 lbs), is wrestling for his fourth straight year.
The wrestling preseason has already kicked off, and the start of the regular season is set on Friday, Dec. 6 for a two-day event at the Northwood Derr Invitational. The VBI (Van Buren Invitational), a two-day event starting on Friday, Jan. 14, is a popular tournament for the wrestlers as it is hosted at Van Buren and gives students the opportunity to watch these hard working athletes in action.
The four freshmen wrestlers this year are Noah Schumaker (120 lbs), Tanner Schroer (138 lbs), Matthew Nieset (145 lbs), and Joe Adomanis (160 lbs). The first-year junior is Bryce Bowers who weighs in at 182 lbs. Also on the squad are sophomores Nick DeVore (160 lbs) and Payten Whitticar (195 lbs). Rounding out the team are juniors Max Frost (152 lbs), Santos Miranda (220 lbs), and Isaac Sexton (285 lbs).
